Start the New Year Off Right — Get More Sleep

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, January 3, 2018

We’ve all heard this advice over and over again. It comes in a number of versions but basically:

You must have 8 hours or else

And then there’s, early to bed, etc. healthy, wealthy & wise

Maybe you don’t need eight hours but you do need at least seven. That’s according to the Sleep Research Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. When it comes to sleep expertise, they’re at the top of the research heap.

Get less than their benchmark seven hours and you’ll be less alert, crabbier and could develop those unsightly bags under your eyes. The average American gets 6.8 hours. It’s a tad under seven but survivable. What’s sad is new research from Gallup says 40% of us will likely be less alert, more crabby and have those bags because we’re sleeping less than six hours a night.

The two organizations offer up some solutions. The first is lavender. Light it up in incense or via a candle. The fragrance tends to relax people and makes it easier to sleep.

Try a weighted blanket. They have advanced, high-tech threading that stimulates deep pressure — or the feeling baby get when swaddled — and are said to reduce anxiety and reset your natural circadian rhythms.

Also — the researchers say — keep your windows and doors open. It lowers the level of carbon dioxide in the home. That leads to better sleep and less restlessness.
